Former Manchester United defender turned Poundit, Garry Neville has outlined one Chelsea player he doubted his abilities, expressing astonishment at his improvement.
The Sky Sport Poundit revealed in a recent analysis that he was one of the football bodies that questioned why Chelsea paid so much for Cole Palmer who was struggling for a place in Pep Guardiola’s first eleven.
According to him, just like many Chelsea fans, he doubted Palmer. However, he incredibly proved him wrong, outclassing all of Chelsea’s recent signings.
“He’s (Cole Palmer) an exceptional talent, beautiful to watch, is a star in a group of very good players. 40 million pounds. I think at the time, I didn’t question him coming to Chelsea. I questioned them signing another wide player, thinking that they had this sort of… this batch of wide players and players that were being accumulated.” He said.
Also, Garry Neville detailed that he wasn’t %100 fully excited when he learned about Chelsea signing Palmer because the record signings they already made didn’t meet his expectations. He mentioned the likes of Madueke, Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez.
Perhaps, he praised his incredible football abilities, admitting that he foresaw him as a young player with potential who would definitely improve. However, he didn’t expect him to improve this far.
His words:
“They signed Mudryk and all those players, Madueke. You’re thinking, how many more do they need to sign of this type? What he’s gone on to become, no one could have ever expected, and I certainly didn’t. He’s exceptional. And to get that level of precision and class and the final pass, the right touch in someone who’s only really two years into doing this is amazing.”
In reality, Cole Palmer deployed an instant dominance since arriving Chelsea. He was signed for a list price of £40 million from Manchester City who didn’t trust his potential. His first season advanced as a blast, following how he outclassed all Chelsea signings and struck double figures, clinching the PFA young player of the year.
