Following Donald Trump’s inauguration into office today as the 47th President of the United States, a former Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has urged Nigeria and other African countries to zero their expectations from Trump’s administration.
The former senator who represented the Kaduna Central Senatorial District took to his social media on Monday to air his opinion on what Africans and the rest of the world should expect from the incoming US president. He describes the president as an “American Nationalist and Businessman” who would not be loved by the rest of the world due to his America-centric mantra.
Shehu opined that Trump would be feared, hated and possibly face enormous resistance from allies and foes as he is gearing towards resetting everything including the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) which according to Shehu would lead to discomfort.
Sani tweeted: “Mr Trump takes over the American Presidency today. A disruptor takes power. Its going to be a great challenge to the World. Its going to be an American Nationalist and Businessman Vs the World. He will pull the plug or change the plugs at the UN, EU, NATO and the American relations with the World.
“He will be feared and not loved and will ultimately face resistance by allies and foes. He will try to reset everything and that is where the discomfort will come. Africa should not expect anything much from Trump, even though Biden didn’t do much either. Trump is back and sadly without Mugabe. Trump may be the drug the World needs to wake up or to stay awake. However, the World must not give up or compromise its universal human values.”
Recall that Donald Trump has been vocal and intentional about the new policies and changes he wants to implement once he assumes office. With his ‘American First’ mantra on trade and migration, he may reinstate and expand the restrictive immigration policies of his first term, which means travel bans may be imposed on many African countries.
